About 6,000 to 8,000 people are being told they should prepare to evacuate because of anticipated flooding from rivers in a coastal South Carolina county. Georgetown County spokeswoman Jackie Broach-Akers says Sunday that a "record event" of up to 10 feet (3 meters) of flooding is expected because of heavy rains dumped earlier by Hurricane Florence.
Separate from the ongoing river flooding, a coastal system could bring a risk of flooding this week.

Travel remains dangerous in southeast North Carolina, where the governor warned of 'treacherous' floodwaters more than a week after Hurricane Florence made landfall. Gov. Roy Cooper is urging residents to stay alert for flood warnings and evacuation orders. Emergency management officials say residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed will begin moving into hotel rooms next week.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - With an eye toward destructive wildfire as California's most immediate climate emergency, Gov. Jerry Brown took action on Friday to broadly expand state prevention efforts while allowing utility companies to shift some fire-related costs to their customers. The far-reaching proposal signed by Brown boosts government fire protection efforts by $1 billion over the next five ...
After a brutal start to September, when Florence and three other named storms churned across the Atlantic at once, hurricane season is simmering again. On Friday afternoon, National Hurricane Center forecasters were watching four systems with the potential to become tropical depressions or storms. The storm closest to the U.S., and headed for the Windward Islands, became better organized during the day after a messy morning and could become a tropical depression by Friday night, forecasters said in a 4:20 p.m. update. A wave rolling off the African coast could also blossom into a tropical depression next week. ...
The National Weather Service says several tornadoes struck as severe storms packing powerful winds and heavy rain left a trail of destruction across southern Minnesota overnight. The extreme weather late Thursday damaged homes and businesses, and turned a small airport upside down. No injuries have been reported. The municipal airport in Faribault remains closed Friday after hangars collapsed on top of planes and the winds tossed several aircraft that had been parked outside.

A new round of evacuations was ordered in South Carolina as the trillions of gallons of water dumped by Hurricane Florence meanders to the sea, raising river levels and threatening more destruction.
LOS ANGELES - Southern Californians might remember the summer of 2018 for its sweltering heat waves, record ocean temperatures and destructive wildfires. But it also claimed another distinction: the summer we went nearly three months without a day of clean air. The region violated federal smog standards for 87 consecutive days, the longest stretch of bad air in at least 20 years, state ...
A timber fire broke out 10 miles east of Placerville on Thursday afternoon, briefly shutting down Highway 50 and prompting evacuations, officials said. Flames from the 12-acre Meyers Fire leapt across the road, prompting Caltrans officials to close down the highway in both directions at 1:20 p.m. Residents of Camino living on 8-Mile Road are currently under mandatory evacuation. An evacuation center is located at the Diamond Springs Fire ...
The idea of a slow-moving storm isn’t exactly a new one. Hurricane Harvey in 2017 bore a similar signature. A recent study showed that the speed of tropical cyclones worldwide over land has decreased by ten percent in the last 70 years, between 1949 and 2016. The science isn’t settled on the cause of the slowdowns, but, if these trends continue, hurricanes like Harvey and Florence -- and the devastating flooding they caused -- could become increasingly common.
A low pressure system about 600 miles (966 km) south-southeast of the Cape Verde islands has a 30 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on Friday.
